Since 2014, Suranga Chandratillake OBE FREng has been a General Partner at Balderton Capital, a pan-European, multi-stage venture capital firm. Suranga focuses on early stage investments in a broad range of technology companies from consumer to deep tech. Suranga started his career as a software engineer, including a stint as an early employee at Autonomy Corporation, ultimately serving as the company's US CTO.
Suranga then founded blinkx, the AI search engine for video and audio in Cambridge in 2004. As CEO, he led the company over the following decade, through the journey of moving to San Francisco, building a profitable business and becoming a billion dollar public company in London.
Suranga has a MA in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge. He holds patents in the area of video discovery and online video advertising, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2012 and was chosen as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders in 2009.
Suranga was a member of the UK Government’s Council for Science and Technology from 2017 to 2024 and currently serves on the Investment Board of the University of Cambridge as well as the governing body of his local state primary school. Suranga was granted an OBE for services to technology and engineering in the 2018 UK New Year’s Honours.
